Jason Felds a8fe2634ca Do string validation before parsing.
...this is NOT the right place for this.

At some point, we need to either use std::stof directly
and/or just accept that we need to use exceptions.

This is meant to be a safer alternative since
NULL can often be 0. Let's not rely on that.

And yes, I know this is a lot of files. This is
a safer thing to do in big commits vs for loops.
